BIOGRAPHY
Peter J Adams (born February 21, 1970) is a Los Angeles based keyboardist, pianist, composer, arranger, and music director. EARLY YEARS - 1970 - 1989 Growing up in Lexington Massachusetts in a household enlivened by music and art gave Peter the freedom to pursue his intrinsic love of music. Thanks to his older brother's album collection, at age seven he spent hours listening to the Beatles and classic rock of the late sixties. He quickly picked up the guitar and bass, but ultimately found his way to the piano by age twelve. Adams began his career playing jazz piano and improvisation as a student of New England Conservatory of Music professor Bruce Torff. Though, he was also interested in electronic music and British artists from the mid-80s like David Sylvian, Kate Bush and Art of Noise. By the time he entered high school, Peter was an accomplished jazz musician and composer winning awards at jazz festivals around the country. BERKLEE - 1989 - 1992 He continued his study of jazz composition at Berklee College of Music in 1990, and frequently played in local jazz clubs and bars, particularly at Ryles in Inman Square Cambridge. Peter frequently performed in the Herman Johnson quartet where he was challenged by many older musicians (he was then 22 years old), and learned how to play many styles of music (jazz, bebop, R&B, fusion, blues, Brazilian and Cuban) on the spot and in front of an audience. NYC - 1992 - 2001 Peter's twenties were spent playing music in smoky Greenwich Village clubs. He soon became a regular on the Bleeker Street blues and R&B scene; the training ground for many great musicians. The 1995 Peter began playing in the band Little Blue ( along with Steve Postell and Michael Jude). The three frequently spent winters and summers living and playing in Aspen Colorado. In 2000 he formed a collaboration with NYC friend Vicki Bell, producer/composer/vocalist at Hipbone Records. Their project, Open Door, released two albums of downtempo electronica, and received critical acclaim from the DJ scene both in New York and in the UK where their album “What’s Behind Door No1”was released in the UK by Sole Music in 2003. It's featured cover of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” is included in more than 100 compilations. Other tracks are used in the American TV series “Nip/Tuck” and "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy". In 1999 Peter connected with New Zealand singer songwriter Julia Darling, and helped promote her album on Wind-Up records (Produced by LA's Tony Berg). He recorded with Boston indie rock icon Juliana Hatfield, performing keyboards on two additional tracks on her 2002 compilation "Gold Stars". This quickly led to touring and recording with Grammy nominee Tracy Bonham from 2000 - 2003. BOSTON - 2001 - 2003 Peter returned to Boston in 2001 and began integrating himself into the Boston rock scene; working with artists; Juliana Hatfield (contributing keyboards to her album "In Exile Deo"), Wheat (International Tour), and extensive performing with Kay Hanley of “Letters To Cleo”. LOS ANGELES - 2003 - present When He arrived in Los Angeles in 2003, Peter quickly established relationships with many of LA's record producers, and has appeared on numerous albums including; Nina Gordon's- Bleeding Heart Graffitti (produced by Bob Rock), Michael Penn - Palms, Runes, Tarot and Tea; Marie Digby - Unfold; Joshua James - Build Me This; and A Fine Frenzy - One Cell In The Sea. In 2006 Peter performed with Tears for Fears on a number of tv performances, including Conan O'brien and The Today Show promoting their single "Call me Mellow" from the 2006 album "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending". In 2007, Peter joined Josh Groban for his Awake tour in the United States. In 2008 he played extensively with Scottish singer/songwriter Justin Currie from the band Del Amitri. The two performed as a duo on Live At Abbey Road studios in London, and on the Late Late show with Craig Ferguson. Peter also played keyboards on Mr. Currie's sophomore release "The Great War", recorded in Glasgow Scotland. Peter has worked with singer songwriter Lex Land, contributing keyboards to her two albums, "Orange Days on Lemon Street" and "Were My Sweetheart To Go". Peter joined Rickie Lee Jones on her "old school tour" performing her first two albums "Rickie Lee Jones" and "Pirates" in their entirety. In 2011 Peter began performing with John Oates of "Hall and Oates". He released two album of original music under the moniker Spotlight, Floodlight; "Polarized" in 2007 and "Nocturne" in 2011. SPOTLIGHT, FLOODLIGHT
Peter has released several albums of original work under the moniker "Spotlight, Floodlight". www.spotlightfloodlight.com Spotlight, Floodlight - Polarized - 2010 "A thick sonic atmosphere where Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, upright bass and double drums interplay with Mellotron, Chamberlin and wordless vocals. It's a collection of instrumental, cinematic, and often mysterious songs, drawing from influences as diverse as Bill Evans, Sigur Ros, Fionna Apple, and Eric Satie." Spotlight, Floodlight - Nocturne -2011 "An album of instrumental compositions. It combines piano improvisations, un-texted vocals, electronics, percussion and string arrangements into a poignant, cinematic landscape." RE-ANIMATOR THE MUSICAL In 2011 Peter worked with horror movie director/ writer/icon Stuart Gordon and composer Mark Nutter to create Re-animator the Musical. Arrangements, sound design, music direction, and original pre-show/intermission/ and exit music by Peter Adams. The production was nominated for 5 LA Ovation awards, and received rave reviews from critics and fans. "Synthesized with valiant gusto by musical whiz PETER ADAMS, it alternates mock-heroic anthems worthy of Bernard Herrmann's trunk with cute
ditties in a Gilbert & Sullivan jugular vein, all teeming with tricky rhymes and wit ("His psychosis gives me chills/He cannot love, he only kills")." -Variety "The keys to this kingdom, however, are the combination of the brilliant comic ensemble and Gordon's pristine craftsmanship as a director — his perfect unity of styles, and his sculpting of each short scene to bring narrative turning points to the fore, supplemented by musical director/arranger PETER ADAMS' building of suspense. Adams performs the score on a synthesizer tucked into the side of the hall, creating the slightly cheesy ambiance that's the life force of Grand Guignol." - LA Weekly "The pre-show and exit music, composed by PETER ADAMS, are wonderful, eerie before-and-afters for the chaos on stage." - WEHO News FILM SCORING Film music - Peter has composed the music for several independent films Maidenhead Bad Moon Rising (short) A Telephone Call (short) DISCOGRAPHY Recording - As a keyboardist, Peter has performed on numerous albums and recordings.
